American Ingenuity. Built by Enthusiasts, for Enthusiasts.
Some watch companies begin with a business plan. LÜM-TEC began with a man who loved taking watches apart.
Founded in 2008 by Chris Wiegand in Mentor, Ohio, LÜM-TEC grew out of a passion for watchmaking, modification, and the art of luminous dial work. Years before launching his own brand, Chris had established himself as a skilled watch technician, developing a reputation for exceptionally detailed modifications and luminous applications.
That expertise eventually evolved into Wiegand Custom Watch, a family-run business specializing in custom watchmaking, component manufacturing, and design. But Chris wanted something more: an opportunity to build watches that reflected everything his company was capable of producing, without the compromises or inflated prices often associated with the luxury watch industry.
LÜM-TEC was the result.
Rather than developing watches in isolation, Chris turned to the enthusiast community. Early designs were shared on watch forums, where collectors provided feedback that directly influenced the finished products. The philosophy was straightforward: build what watch enthusiasts actually wanted, invest in the quality of the product rather than expensive advertising, and let the watches speak for themselves.
The brand quickly found an audience. Its first collections sold out within months, establishing LÜM-TEC as one of the early names in the modern American microbrand movement.
Today, LÜM-TEC remains a family-run American watch company known for rugged construction, distinctive designs, limited-production releases, and its signature Maximum Darkness Visibility (MDV) luminous technology. Through Wiegand Custom Watch, the team also designs and produces watches for numerous other brands worldwide.
Why We Feature LÜM-TEC
At Blackland Watch Co., we believe some of the most interesting stories in watchmaking come from people who started with a passion rather than a corporate strategy.
LÜM-TEC represents exactly what we want customers to discover: a watch company built by someone who understands the product from the inside out, listens to the people wearing it, and takes personal pride in what carries his name.
It's a reminder that great watches don't have to come from century-old Swiss manufacturers. Sometimes they come from a small workshop in Ohio, where someone decided they could build something better.
