The Art Deco Depthmaster 39mm is a modern reissue of Nivada Grenchen's 1960s dive watch, an original and important model in dive watch history. It keeps the iconic cushion case and the Art Deco dial, whose 3, 6, 9 and 12 numerals earned it the "Pac-Man" nickname, a nod to the arcade game character.
The matte black dial carries Art Deco numerals treated with Swiss Super-LumiNova. The 316L stainless steel cushion case measures 39 mm, 13 mm thick and 47 mm lug to lug, with a 20 mm lug width. A unidirectional rotating steel bezel with 120 clicks and a 15-minute scale lets you time a dive, the sapphire crystal resists scratches, and the screw-down crown and caseback secure a water resistance of 100 ATM (1000 metres), with an automatic helium escape valve for saturation diving.
Inside beats the Swiss Soprod P024 automatic movement, three hands without date, at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 38-hour power reserve. It comes on plain, stitched or racing leather, rubber, the flat link bracelet or the beads of rice bracelet.
The story
In 1965, the year after the Depthomatic, Nivada released the Depthmaster rated to 1,000 m, a serious tool watch in a sculpted cushion case. The reissue keeps that capability, with a helium escape valve, a screw-down crown and a unidirectional bezel.
Nivada Grenchen was founded in Grenchen, Switzerland, in 1926 and relaunched in 2018 by Guillaume Laidet and Rémi Chabrat. Every model is a reissue from the brand's own archives, not a homage.
