Paul Cattin and Georges Christian founded Oris in Hölstein in 1904, naming it for a nearby brook. The Big Crown pilot's watch followed in 1938, its oversized crown designed to be operated with flying gloves. In 1982, amid the upheaval of the quartz era, a management buyout returned the company to independent ownership and set it on a mechanical-only course.
